The Tennessee Titans sign DT Shaun Smith

The Titans have signed 29-year old DT Shaun Smith.  Smith played in 16 games for the Chiefs last year and he had 56 tackles, 1 sack and 2 tackles for a loss.  He has now played in 79 games in his first 7 years in the NFL and he has 208 tackles, 7 tackles for a loss, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and he has defensed 4 passes.  This was a good signing for the Titans as Smith will help them out on the interior of the defense.

The Tennessee Titans officially release QB Vince Young

Everyone knew that this move was coming as the Titans have released 28-year old QB Vince Young.  Young played in 9 games (8 starts) for the Titans last year and he completed 93 of 156 passes (59.6%) for 1,255 yards with 10 TD passes and 3 INTs (98.6 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 25 times for 125 yards (5.0 ypc) last year.  Young played in 54 games (47 starts) in his five years with the Titans and he completed 689 of 1,190 passes (57.9%) for 8,098 yards with 42 TD passes and 42 INTs (75.7 QB Rating).  Young also carried the ball 264 times for 1,380 yards (5.2 ypc) with 12 TD runs for the Titans.  Young was 30-17 (63.8%) as the Titans’ starting QB.  He also made it to 2 Pro Bowls but that was after a lot of other QBs backed out of the game after being elected.  This is addition by subtraction as Young often acted like a 7-year old kid in his time with the Titans.

The Tennessee Titans have released DT Tony Brown

The Titans have released 30-year old DT Tony Brown.  Brown played in 11 games for the Titans last year and he had 22 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 3.5 sacks and 1 pass defensed.  Brown played in 5 years for the Titans appearing in 69 games in which he had 197 tackles, 20 tackles for a loss, 18 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 5 fumble recoveries and he defensed 12 passes.  This was a salary cap decision and little more as Brown has been a decent player for the Titans.

The Tennessee Titans sign QB Matt Hasselbeck

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking News,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General by admin on Wednesday 27 July 2011 at 3:30 pm

The Tennessee Titans have signed 35-year old QB Matt Hasselbeck to a multi-year deal.  Hasselbeck played in 14 games (all starts) for the Seahawks last year and he completed 266 of 444 passes (59.9%) for 3,001 yards with 12 TD passes and 17 INTs (73.2 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 23 times for 60 yards (2.6 ypc) with 3 TD runs last year.  Hasselbeck has now played in 170 games (131 starts) in his first 12 years in the NFL and he has completed 2,572 of 4,279 yards (60.1%) for 29,759 yards with 176 TD passes and 128 INTs (82.2 QB Rating).  Hasselbeck has also carried the ball 306 times for 1,139 yards (3.7 ypc) with 8 TD runs in his NFL career.  Hasselbeck is a classic dropback passer, so I look for the Titans’ passing game to really improve in 2011.  Hasselbeck has a 69-62 (52.7%) record as a starting QB in the NFL and he has been to 3 Pro Bowls.  Hasselbeck will start at QB until the Titans deem rookie Jake Locker ready to go, and he will also mentor him.  I really like this move for the Titans.

Kerry Collins of the Tennessee Titans calls it a career

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking News,Front Page,General,Leaving Town by admin on Thursday 7 July 2011 at 7:41 pm

38-year old QB Kerry Collins won’t be Jake Locker’s tutor this season as he has decided to retire from the NFL.  Collins played in 9 games (7 starts) for the Titans last year and he completed 160 of 278 passes (57.6%) for 1,823 yards with 14 TD passes and 8 INTs (82.2 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 10 times for 1 yard (0.1 ypc) last year for the Titans.  Collins played in 42 games (32 starts) in his five years with the Titans and he completed 613 of 1,081 passes (56.7%) for 6,804 yards with 33 TD passes and 29 INTs (74.6 QB Rating).  Collins also carried the ball 32 times for 49 yards (1.3 ypc) with 1 TD run for the Titans.  The Titans were 15-17 (46.9%) when Collins started at QB and he made it to 1 Pro Bowl with the team.  Collins likely won’t be missed a whole lot as the Titans will likely bring in a younger veteran QB to mentor Jake Locker.

Eddie George was a great RB for the Tennessee Titans

Blogged under Blast from the Past,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by admin on Monday 4 July 2011 at 2:17 pm

Eddie George’s rookie season was with the Houston Oilers but he spent his last seven years with the Tennessee Titans.  George’s upright running style likely shortened his NFL career due to the beating he took, but he also dished out his fair share of punishment at the same time.  George played in 128 games in his 8 years for the Titans/Oilers and he carried the ball 2,733 times for 10,009 yards (3.7 ypc) with 64 TD runs.  George is the Titans/Oilers all time leader in rushing yards and he’s second to Earl Campbell (73) in rushing TDs.  George also caught 259 passes for 2,144 yards (8.3 avg) with 10 TD grabs for the Titans/Oilers.  George rushed for at least 1,031 times 7 of his 8 years with the Titans/Oilers.  He also had at least 10 TDs rushing in a year twice.  George made it to 4 Pro Bowls with the Titans/Oilers.  George better enjoy his time as the Titans/Oilers all-time leading rusher as Chris Johnson likely has his sites on them.
