Quinton Ganther is pushing for Chris Henry’s job for the Tennessee Titans

2nd year running back Chris Henry probably felt that he had the #3 RB job locked up heading into training camp but he’s wrong about that.  He has played well during the preseason with 14 carries for 66 yards (4.7 ypc), but, Quinton Ganther has been incredible this year so far.  Ganther has carried the football 11 times for 131 yards (11.9 ypc) with 2 TD runs.  Ganther is making a strong push to bump Henry down the depth chart but he will have to keep up the good work to make it happen.

Rookie RB Chris Johnson is putting pressure on LenDale White for the starting gig at RB for the Tennessee Titans

Rookie Chris Johnson has been outstanding this preseason as he is applying pressure to LenDale White of the Titans for the featured role in the running game.  Johnson has carried the football 14 times for 123 yards (8.8 ypc) with 1 TD run this preseason.  Johnson is a lot faster than White, but, White has a lot more Power than Johnson.  LenDale White has carried the football 14 times for 72 yards (5.1 ypc) this preseason.  Look for Johnson and White to share the job early in the regular season.

The Tennessee Titans need to start seeing something out of the QBs

I know it’s just the preseason and the Titans are averaging 25.5 points per game and 431.5 yards of offense per game so what’s the big deal?  The big deal is that Vince Young and Kerry Collins are both looking pretty awful.  The Titans are averaging a stunning 240.0 yards rushing and 7.0 ypc and that’s why they are putting up all of those yards and points.  Vince Young has really looked pathetic in the preseason as he has completed 7 of 19 passes (36.8%) for 54 yards (45.3 QB Rating).  He has also carried the football 2 times for 39 yards this preseason (19.5 ypc).  Kerry Collins still has a big arm but he doesn’t know where the football is going most of the time.  Collins has completed 11 of 31 passes (35.5%) for 214 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 interceptions (71.2 QB Rating).  The Titans’ best QB this preseason and been third stringer Ingle Martin.  Martin has completed 9 of 15 passes (60%) for 142 yards without a TD pass or an interception (91.5% QB Rating).  As long as the Titans are effective running the football all the QB will have to do is manage the football game and not screw up.

Tennessee Titans 17, Oakland Raiders 16

The Titans won the football game last night but they didn’t really play that well especially on defense where they gave up 380 yards.  The Titans won the game on a last second field goal by John Vaughn covering 33 yards.  Fullback Ahmard Hall also had a huge play in this game on special teams when he scored a TD by recovering a Johnnie Lee Higgins’ fumble in the end zone.

Vince Young was terrible last night as he couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn.  He completed only 4 of 13 passes for only 37 yards last night.  Kerry Collins was just a tad better than Young completing only 4 of 15 passes for 109 yards with a 51-yard TD strike to rookie Lavelle Hawkins.  Third stringer Ingle Martin led the Titans on the game winning drive last night as he was 6 of 11 for 103 yards.  Rookie RB Charles Johnson looked special again last night leading the Titans’ in rushing with 46 yards on 8 carries (5.8 ypc).  LenDale White also looked pretty good last night rushing for 39 yards on 8 carries (4.9 ypc).  Chris Henry pitched in with 28 yards rushing on 5 carries (5.6 ypc) last night.  Rookie WR Lavelle Hawkins had a good game with 2 grabs for 70 yards (35.0 avg) including a 51-yard TD reception.  Biren Ealy pitched in with 3 catches for 50 yards (16.7 avg) and TE Bo Scaife caught 3 passes for 40 yards (13.3 avg).  The Titans finished up with 140 yards rushing on 26 carries (5.4 ypc) and they also completed 14 of 39 passes for 228 yards.

The Titans’ defense did not look good last night despite only giving up 16 points.  Linebacker Stanford Keglar led the way for the Titans last night with 8 tackles and a fumble recovery.  Linebacker Stephen Tulloch and safety Vincent Fuller each pitched in with 7 tackles apiece.  The Raiders finished up with 224 yards rushing on 37 carries (6.1 ypc) last night.  They also completed 17 of 28 passes for 156 yards.

Will Jeff Fisher wave his magic wand in 2008 for the Tennessee Titans?

Somehow Jeff Fisher helped lead the Titans to the playoffs with a 10-6 record despite getting awful play from Vince Young which shows how good of a coach he really is.  Of course, the season ended with a thud with a 17-6 loss at San Diego.  It will be interesting to see if Fisher has any tricks up his sleeve for the 2008 season because he will need some to get the Titans back to the playoffs.  They should have either drafted a legit WR or signed one in free agency but they didn’t so Vince Young will still have no one to throw too….not that he could hit them anyway.  Fisher has now been a head coach in the NFL for 14 seasons and he has compiled a 115-99 record (53.7%) during the regular season and he is 5-5 in the post season in his career.  If Fisher gets the Titans back to the playoffs in 2008 he should get a key to the city from Nashville.
